Probably 2 Planning Commisioners FIRED by Council CANNIBALIZATION in NP gets 5 votes!!

FRIENDS:  It is unbelievable but true Al Adam was NOT re-appointed by a 3-1 vote Jackie did not have the COURAGE to vote either  way!! This for a man who almost beat Denny by only 225 votes!! The other firing may be below the radar. Any onwe who can read the tea leaves could see it coming as she voted AGAINST the auto mall sign as well as OTHER VOTESD against the SPECIAL interests. After all RECALL Zeanah leaders Jill run the Chamber and Peter Turpel replace Comm Lunn
They had the meeting while the city watched 'Bama and NO ONE should up and watch how as usual they MISTREATED Me AND NP business owners by ignoring their OWN $50,000 study about existing businesses being cannibalized by new ones by ill conceived zone change.
Jackie mis understood me when I sd that Lowe's too will cannibalize Home Depot. i NEVER even implied that either would go under as they are multi billion $$ entiries and Home Depot is willing to EAT its own by opening the Hampshire rd now blighted location tahnks to Mrsa. Irwin and the foxy vote against this which is like waving a red flag before a bull telling ALL corporate America that we do NOT welcome businesses.
Lord help us!! God bless TO!!
COPY Earlier email:
You win COUNCIL as I did not have time to contact the LOCAL NP businesses. Hope you can see the pics that I have taken of the vacancies + shot of the 1995 City paid report; did staff provide you a copy? Why do we pay $50-$100 grand for these reports if we do NOT use them?
Is there a contract for the FIRE Station, new location because it was NOT available @ Plann Comm mtg & staff report is silent on this.
How can you vote on this IF this has not been decided!

Daryl Reynolds, appointed by Fox, has served on the commission for six years and she said she will apply for reappointment.
“I love that I have a voice in what happens and what gets approved by the city,” she said. “I think out city is very well planned, and I want to continue that.”
Tina Grumney, who currently chairs the commission and was originally appointed by Gillette in January 2006, also hopes to continue to serve.
“I believe our current Planning Commission has been good for the city due to the balance of diverse experience,” she wrote in an e-mail to The Star. “ My decision to apply again would be to offer my 30 years of experience as a resident, active community volunteer, and a business professional who works with housing and municipalities throughout the nation.”
Anyone wishing to apply can get more information by contacting Towne by phone at 449-2340 or by e-mail at mtowne@toaks.org.

Stacked deck’ now on planning board

    2011-02-10 / Letters
Although I have voted for Andy Fox in the last two elections, I now find myself in agreement with the letter writers that contend he is playing politics with the nomination of Al Adam to the planning board.

I voted for Adam last November as well as for Fox, because I felt we needed balance on the City Council and because I am concerned about adding anything high-rise, signs or buildings, in our beautifully low-rise city.

Now I feel a lack of confidence in the judgment shown by our mayor. There is no question about the motives or the competency of Mr. Adam on that board.

He gets an “A” from me on both counts. We needed his voice there. Business and real estate developers are well-represented.

By pushingAlAdam off the planning board, we now have a stacked deck, and that can’t be good. Elliot Blinder Westlake Village

Well, guys, has your face dried yet from the huge spitball just hurled by the T.O. City Council in regards to the removal of Al Adam?

Not just you but 15,000 other voters in our area? Just how much are we willing to stand for, or is our new position to sit for?

This is, without question, the most in your face, the “hell with you and your vote” outright payback I have ever had the displeasure of learning about. I almost feel it somehow borders on being criminal.

We give them the most important thing we own as an American citizen, which is our vote, and they, in turn, give us the shaft.

Come on, just how much are we willing to take?

As a little aside, it is wellknowm that when an entity, i.e., the car dealers, want to gain something, they begin by asking for something outlandish.

They will then tone down their desire to make the voter feel they are making concessions but end up with what they wanted to begin with. And with a big chunk of your taxpayer money.

Again, how much are we willing to take? Kathryn Levesque Thousand Oaks

  4. THEIR way of thinking in black & white: http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/jan/31/self-deluding-fantasy/

Re: your Jan. 30 editorial, “T.O.Council sends wrong message”:

It seems to me that when a person embarks on a campaign to oust an employer/appointer, manager or anyone in a supervisory capacity, especially in a political campaign, expectations of success must dominate his mind.

The failure or success of the ouster always results in a parting of the association; either the boss leaves or the employee does. Authority or confidence will always be undermined by such an attempt.

I say this particular retribution should not be called revenge but the natural course of action in a civilized society. Otherwise, anarchy would result!

Al Adam, whom I do not know, attacked the character, ability, etc. of the City Council majority to properly govern. Regardless of his popularity at the polls in November, he was not elected! Regardless of his favor with his nominator, he attacked the overwhelming majority of the Council, all of whom have been elected.

Claudia Bill-de la Pena, whom I do know and respect and admire, is properly elected by the voters. Yet, regarding her nomination of Mr. Adam to a new term on the Planning Commission, we adhere to a nomination process by each council member that must be followed by ratification by the entire council.

If you apply this line of thought to any other human endeavor, the course of action is blatantly clear! The loser of the struggle is out! Any thought of Mr. Adam, after his election failure, of retaining his seat on a newly formed Planning Commission is self-deluding fantasy!

  6. Thousand Oaks residents will have additional opportunities to air their opinions about a controversial proposed freeway sign for the Thousand Oaks Auto Mall before it becomes the subject of City Council deliberation.

The first opportunity will be tonight when Auto Mall Dealers Association representatives host the second of two public workshops designed to gather public input on the proposed 35-foot-tall sign, which has generated outcry over its size and the inclusion of an electronic reader board.

The second chance will be before the Thousand Oaks City Council, which will hold a study session Feb. 22 on the issue before it goes before the panel for a formal hearing on March 8.

"This is one of those things that we need to get right for a variety of reasons," Mayor Andy Fox said as he pitched the idea at the council's annual goal setting meeting on Tuesday, adding later "I think more community process was needed."

About 85 people attended the auto dealers outreach meeting in January at the Los Robles Greens Banquet Center that was marked by anger, outbursts and heckling of auto dealer representatives and a man who spoke in favor of the sign. Fifty-nine comment cards were collected at the meeting, with the sign's size and the reader board causing the most concern among residents.

Fox said he wanted to ensure people all perspectives have an opportunity to weigh in on the project that could be precedent setting if it is approved. At the same time, Fox pointed to similar outcry when the current sign was debated about in 1993. Today, a number of individuals who oppose the new sign have thrown their support behind the existing one, which will be removed as part of a larger street-widening and landscaping project surrounding the Auto Mall.

Councilwoman Claudia Bill-de la Peña said she did not think a study session was warranted because of the current opposition. She wondered if holding a session so residents could weigh in would be fair to the public. The councilwoman, who voted against the study session, suggested council members attend the auto dealer's meeting tonight.

"I think that perhaps actually that may anger the residents further," Bill-de la Peña said about holding the study session instead of voting on the project on Feb. 22. "I don't think that adding another meeting is going to be beneficial. I just don't think it would be a good use of time. I think we have heard the public loud and clear."

Other council members countered that in light of the angry tenor of the auto mall dealer's first community forum, providing a controlled forum to share all ideas and viewpoints would be helpful.

Tonight's outreach meeting, hosted by the Auto Mall Dealers Association, will include a moderator. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Los Robles Greens Banquet Center, 299 S. Moorpark Road.

The council's study session will take place at 6 p.m. in council chambers in the Forum Theatre at the Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd.

The freeway sign is part of an $8.6 million project to increase parking at the Auto Mall, improve landscaping and add signs directing motorists to various dealerships. While the auto dealers are paying for the bulk of the project, $2 million in city Redevelopment Agency money has been earmarked for street widening. The project, without the sign, was approved by the council in December.

I agree with stanger: I say If you cant see/dont notice the Auto Mall from the 101 Freeway when you are driving by on the 101, you shouldnt be driving. The current sign ( and the amazingly bright lights on the dealers lots) sure get my attention. We dont need a "Van Nuys Blvd" in Thousand Oaks. But the Auto Mall Dealers have a lot of money to buy influence...so, we will probably have a new, bigger sign.
On the other hand, something does need to be done about parking around the Auto Mall. I dropped my crummy old Ford off for service a couple weeks ago at Kemp Ford and there were 2 Auto Hauler trucks unloading cars in the middle of the street almost in front of the Ford dealer. Not on T.O Blvd, but on the side street between the Ford dealer and Rusnak Porsche/Audi. Parking in general is horrible around the Auto mall.

  8. Welcome to the jungle, Al Adam. In a microcosm of the U.S .political scene at large, filthy politics has come to the Conejo Valley. The perceived impunity on the part of Dennis Gillette, Andy Fox and Tom Glancy is shameful.

The city needs a balance between business and economic success and slow, purposeful, targeted growth, joined in an effort to make this city a desirable place to live. I’ve only lived here since 1993, but the acceleration of dirty politics and divisiveness in the last five years is astonishing.

The whole Lakes saga is disgraceful, and I think in the end will prove to be a dismal failure. The auto mall sign controversy is about greed, nothing more. When I hear a chamber of commerce spokesman say we have the “biggest auto mall in the world,” I wonder: Why do we need a new sign?

As to the slap in the face of Claudia Bill de la Pena, not once, but twice., where has civility and respect gone? City politics is now about digging your boot heel into your opponent’s neck?

Al, I hope you will stand up and start the recall campaign that they deserve. This is bigger than the Planning Commission, it’s about freedom, justice and the American way. This is our city, let’s take it back.

  9. Crossing the line from democracy to tyranny

In considering the actions of the Thousand Oaks City Council (Andy Fox, Dennis Gillette and Tom Glancy), I must say that while I have been supportive of the council in the past, I cannot support its recent actions with regard to not confirming Al Adam for another term on the Planning Commission.

Fox, Gillette and Glancy have not provided any factual basis for their decision. They have not identified error or fault in any decisions that the Planning Commission has made, and have not demonstrated any instance in the past five years where Adam has been negligent or derelict in his duties as a commissioner. In fact, Adam has worked to move items through the commission as recently evidenced in his request to split the landscaping and parking items from the sign issue for the auto mall. This allowed the much-needed issue of parking to move forward while debate and discussion have continued regarding the need for changes in the freeway sign.

What is occurring here is political pay back from the 2010 City Council election. The inability for Fox, Gillette and Glancy to separate the rhetoric of the election from the ongoing business of the city is disturbing. This teeters on tyranny, and is not acceptable. Thomas Jefferson warned about the dangers of tyranny, and once stated that "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."

While Fox, Gillette and Glancy may hold a majority on the council, they must be sensitive of the responsibilities of the majority toward others. As noted by Alexis de Tocqueville, a noted political theorist and historian best known for his Democracy in America, "If it be admitted that a man possessing absolute power may misuse that power by wronging his adversaries, why should not a majority be liable to the same reproach? Men do not change their characters by uniting with one another; nor does their patience in the presence of obstacles increase with their strength."

Majority rule cannot be the only expression of "supreme power" in a democracy. If so, as Tocqueville notes above, the majority would too easily tyrannize the minority. Thus, while it is clear that democracy must guarantee the expression of the popular will through majority rule, it is equally clear that it must guarantee that the majority will not abuse its power to violate the basic and inalienable rights of the minority.

Democracy, therefore, requires minority rights equally as it does majority rule. Indeed, as democracy is conceived today, the minority's rights must be protected no matter how singular or alienated that minority is from the majority; otherwise, the majority's rights lose their meaning.

Fox, Gillette and Glancy have trampled on democracy.

One of the basic guides for democracy is Robert's Rules of Order. Its beginning offers a concise statement of the democratic ideal: "American Parliamentary Law is built upon the principle that rights must be respected: the rights of the majority, of the minority, of individuals, of absentees, and rights of all of these together."

I urge Claudia Bill-de la Peña to resubmit Al Adam's name for Planning Commission. In doing so, I hope that Fox, Gillette and Glancy realize that they have crossed the line from democracy to tyranny, reconsider their prior vote, and do the right thing this time — return Adam to the Planning Commission.

  12. vc star 2/14/2011 Claudia Bill-de la Pena has shown herself to be a true professional by the manner in which she has endured the many indignities and insults heaped upon her by the present City Council majority.

The recent display of revenge politics the Andy Fox, Dennis Gillette, Thom Glancy trio (the Three un-Wise Men) by passing over Claudia Bill-de la Pena to be city mayor pro-tem and the Fox-led ousting of Al Adam from the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission for ostensibly “not thinking objectively” is shameful. Those misdeeds must not go on unrewarded.

Residents are considering a recall of the Three un-Wise Men, but realistically that is unlikely to be achieved. However, there is a petition presently being circulated and signed by concerned Thousand Oaks voters to establish term limits for the City Council. I strongly urge every eligible voter to sign that petition and push those term limits through to enactment.

In the near future there will be an election for two seats on the City Council. It is most probable that if Al Adam were to run once again for City Council, he would be successful in capturing Tom Glancy's seat on the council.

If another anti-Fox/Gillette-way-of-thinking candidate (there were a few in the last election) were to capture Jacqui Irwin's council seat, Fox and Gillette would then become the minority on the council. What could be more enjoyable than to watch the vengeful Fox and dictatorial Gillette squirm on the dais as they are outvoted 3-2 at City Council meetings for a few years?

A less business-interest-driven, a no greater traffic-congestion, and a return to stricter adherence to the original master plan and zoning restrictions future for Thousand Oaks is up to you, voters.

  13. vc star 2/14/2011 Could it be that Al Adam really won the Thousand Oaks City Council election? Mark Lunn, one-time appointee of Andy Fox, Dennis Gillette and Thom Glancy and now Ventura County Clerk, admitted there were counting errors in nine county elections but didn't feel any need to take a second look at the Thousand Oaks City Council race. This race was even closer at less than 0.14 percent, or less than one quarter of a percentage point of over 100,000 votes.

Additionally, Adam handily won the absentee vote and his running mate, Claudia Bill-de la Pena, was the largest vote-getter, receiving 5,000 more votes than Gillette. Our right to vote and have each vote counted accurately is sacred and should not be compromised. The people of this county need a recount in at least these 10 elections, including Thousand Oaks to ensure democracy.

It certainly smells in Thousand Oaks. People cannot have confidence in our election system if political retribution and inaccurate or sloppy record keeping are tolerated. Maybe Mark Lunn should be audited.

It would appear that Ms. Gregory is inconsistent with her request for a recount for Al Adam. In 1998 I won election over Judy Lazar with a 247 vote margin. The percentage was not much different than the 146 vote margin for Gillette over Adam. Gregory did not ask for a recount in 1998 because she was on the "winning" side.

Gregory should demonstrate moral turpitude before barking as is her penchant.

So, dandelcampo thinks that moral turpitude is a good thing? That might explain some things...LOL!

perhaps I should have used "depravity" since this word applies. Morality is not a strong suit for Gregory.

Aw, come on dandelcampo. You used a term you didn't understand...twice. You don't really mean that Gregory should demonstrate moral turpitude and you don't mean that she should demonstrate depravity, either.
Thanks for giving me a laugh, though.
