A proposed assisted living facility on Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks has been scrapped by the developer, seven months after a planned affordable housing project for seniors across the street was pulled because of neighbors’ opposition.
Mohammed Esa, president of Hydam Group Inc., notified the city of his decision in a letter dated April 30, which officials received Thursday. Esa’s letter did not give a reason for the project’s demise.
Instead, he wrote he would continue with the development of seven single-family homes on the property on the northwest corner of Lone Oaks and Hillcrest drives. The homes were previously approved for the 4.67-acre site.
“I think they are going full speed ahead,” said Mark Towne, deputy director of Thousand Oaks’ Community Development Department.
Esa could not be immediately reached by phone.
The Hydam assisted living project called for a building with two, two-story wings and a three-story center. It would have had 122 one- and two-bedroom units with 25 reserved for memory care, and amenities such as a library and exercise room.
The project would have required a zone change.
In October Esa said he would move forward with the project despite the vehement opposition from neighbors that had resulted in affordable housing provider Many Mansions from pulling a project that would have provided housing to needy senior citizens.
