TO Term Limits Stories..letters + 01/2011

Why term limits are bad for T.O.

2011-02-10 / Letters
Term limits are already proscribed by federal, state and municipal law. They are called elections.
Where elections are held at acknowledged times, the people provide the term limits. To do otherwise subverts the system.
Additional suppression of allowed periods of service tends to produce a situation where we always have a new, untrained, perhaps unaware, definitely inexperienced individual in a position of power.

Such a situation naturally relegates an inordinate amount of control/ power to the staff since a good leader always closely evaluates staff’s recommendations. In most such instances the elected official becomes the tip of staff’s spear rather than the throwing arm of the people.
I favor us having an informed populace as our gatekeepers. I favor keeping experienced, listening officials in control of our destinies rather than bureaucratic career staff members regardless of their devotion to duty and experience.
Proponents of term limits want the law to perform the task of the people—to retain or reject candidates based on mindless periods of time rather than to pay attention to platforms and past performance.
That is to say, we should reward good performance or reject poor performance at the next election. Forrest Frields Thousand Oaks

I'm frankly tired of reading about the wonderful job our City Council is doing.

You cannot compare today's Council to what we had year's ago when we had Alex Fiore and others. We need term limits for obvious reasons. I guess Andy Fox, Tom Clancy and Dennis Gillette seem to think they’re the only one's who can run the show. Claudia Bill-de la Pena has been treated badly by Fox and the other two, and of course we know why, It's called supporting Al Adam who ran on term limits.

Thank God we now have 11,000 signatures to move forward on this.

Somebody else had mentioned a recall I think that's a great idea.

  2. Re: your Feb. 8 article, “Thousand Oaks term limits author turns in 11,000 signatures”:

Term limits are being hotly debated in our local news. I read an article where Gillette explained his position on this issue. Gillette stated, "I was chased down by paid petition gatherers.” He also said, "I thought we already had term limits, they're called elections, and I'm also concerned about the system creating ways for citizens not to vote."

As a signature gatherer myself, I can assure everyone, I wasn't paid. As an ex-cop, I would think if Gillette was chased down or harassed, in anyway, he could summon assistance. Why would he criticize a perfectly legal means to give people freedom to make changes they believe are better?

I was there to give people the opportunity to voice their opinions about the matter. Some of Gillette's supporters were "in my face,” but I gave them the opportunity by listening and left myself open to learn more about their view.

Don't be lead astray. Term limits are not elections, you still have the privilege and responsibility to vote. People who care enough about issues and see ways changes can make things better should be applauded for the work that goes into initiatives.

Apparently 11,000 people agree. Gillette and his like council members have abused their power, and they want to take yours away, too.

While I do NOT like term limits I will vote for this as a compromise Example they need to change sign law that does not allow me to put 2 signs on my front lawn Denny's neighbor NEXT door neighbor had TWO signs 1 face Sidlee and 1 facing Lynn Why don't he and Claudia CHANGE the ord and make it like ALL neighboring cities like Ventura, Westlake

The late Fiore also CHANGED for the worse and became a dictator for the staff to shove the ugly city hall down our throat I do not like term limits but this 12 yr off for 4 may be a good compromise What is needed are districts which again makes city small reduces costs and brings accountability
