With Conejo Valley Days wrapping up on Mother’s Day, quite a few grandparents accompanied youngsters to the Thousand Oaks festival as a gift to their daughters or daughters-in-law Sunday.
“We’re giving mom a break,” said Sam Hilow as her two grandchildren enjoyed some ice cream.
Other moms, like Susy Suescun, of Agoura Hills, chose to spend the day with their children at the event.
“It only happens once a year so I thought it would be fun for them,” she said. “It’s great, and it’s got smaller rides for the little ones and games.
“I’ve been coming my whole life and now I’m here with my kids,” said Leslie Pearson, of Newbury Park. “It’s something I grew up with, and now I want my kids to be able to experience it, and it’s just a fun family day.”
Gusty winds canceled the popular Motocross stunt demonstration by FMX specialists Vince Morgan and Brian McCarty. But for those with the stomach for it, there were plenty of other ways to get a thrill and an adrenaline rush.
Kiaara Labon, 21, Amanda Green, 22, and Breyanna Loncono, 24, of Ventura, took the Mach 1 ride, which lifted them 120 feet into the air and whirled them around to experience of 3.5 G-force.
“It’s like jumping out of a plane,” said Labon, who has sky-dived. “It’s crazy.”
“It tickles your stomach. That’s for sure,” Green said.
Jade Moya, 10, went on the Sky Flyer, whirling around in a chair high above Conejo Creek Park South.
“You feel like you’re on a rocket ship, and it’s really fun,” she said. “If you feel like you want to put your hands up, and you do, you feel like you’re really like flying up in the air.”
The Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge always comes to Conejo Valley Days to serve up its barbecue for visitors, and Tom Hartin, a past Conejo Valley Days grand marshal, cited success.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming to look for us,” Hartin said. “We’re probably up to 900 pounds of beef and probably in the neighborhood of 300 pounds of chicken, and our baby back ribs are really going good this year.”
This year, for the first time, the festival used Ray Cammack Shows, a carnival ride and midway games provider. The company provides the carnivals for the Los Angeles and Orange county fairs and the Coachella Music Festival, and Hartin called it a great addition.
“RCS is fantastic,” he said. “To me this is really, really special, and they’ve done a fantastic job.”
