The readers of this paper will recall that several weeks ago the sheriffs were granted a pay raise.
Party A (the supervisors) negotiated with Party B (the sheriff’s union) over how much more they could squeeze out of Party C (the taxpayer) and the end result was a 14 percent pay raise.
The storyline was that this all had to do with making it so the sheriff’s could now contribute to their own pensions and Party C should just accept this as an outcome of the governor’s pension reform that has made everything wonderful.
Well, Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors is going to consider a similar pay raise for themselves. Wait a minute, you say, their pay is supposed to be limited to 70 percent of a judge’s pay and you are correct – 70 percent of a judge’s salary. Except when it’s not. Except when they vote themselves “supplemental pay.” If you are not familiar with “supplemental pay,” well it’s all very high level and too complicated for you to understand anyway.
Some people might call this corruption, but I will refrain from using that term in a family newspaper. Don’t worry though, this is all for the pension system that has been fixed by the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act. Everything is fine.
Oh and by the way, the pension cost to the county is going up to $180 million – an increase of $17 million – that is another $17 million in unfunded services that are services you won’t be getting. Then there is that new paid holiday the sheriffs are getting.
You can bet all the additional overtime needed to staff the sheriffs that day is not included in that $17 million of unfunded services.

You can hear the dopey voters out there.
Long, Zaragosa, Parks and Foy all are unopposed for the next term. Bennett is our only supervisor who was truly elected for the 2015 term.
Making better choices requires that you have a choice.
This year there are just two out of ten county seats where you actually have a choice of candidates.
If you don't vote June 3rd you are sending the message that you're OK with having no choice and no voice.

It is often helpful to look at who is supporting what on the ballot.
Fact is the political teabaggers, purveyors of stupidity are supporting this pension measure. Therefore normal people need to vote no.
